Bold Coast

From left to right:

West Quoddy, built 1808, current 1858. Marks SW entrance to Quoddy Chan. Eastern most point in continental U.S.A. Part of Quoddy Head State Park. - Whitlocks Mill, northernmost light in U.S. first built 1892, current in 1910. S bank of St. Croix River near Calais. Automated 1969. C.G. owns tower, grounds private. - Little River Light, built 1847, current 1876. On Little River Island at mouth of Little River and entrance to Culter Harbor. Automated 1975, skeleton tower is current light. - Machias Seal Island, in Maine waters but maintained by Canadian government. Sovereignty question. 12 miles off coast of Cutler, Maine. Island home to large population of puffins and sea birds. - Lubec Channel, cast-iron sparkplug style light built 1890 on W side of channel near Lubec. Automated 1939. Renovated in 1992. - Mulholland Light, built 1885 on Canadian Campobello Is. on E side of Lubec Channel. In the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. - East Quoddy Light, built 1829 on most N point on Campobello Is. Maintained by Canadian C.G. Painted with the red cross of St. George. Incoming tide can rise as much as five feet per hour!

Naushon Island in Buzzard's Bay. - Stage Harbor, est. 1880, Harding Beach. - Highland (Cape Cod), est. 1797, 1857. NE side of Cape Cod. Moved in 1996. - Nobska Point, est. 1828, 1876. Woods Hole Harbor entrance. - Monomoy Point, est. 1823, 1855. On south end of Monomoy Island. - Race Point, est. 1816, 1876. North tip of Cape Cod. - Hyannis Harbor, privately built, faux tower. - Long Point, est. 1827, current 1875 on Provincetown Harbor. - Chatham, est. 1808, 1877 as twin towers, 1923 a single. On Wside Chatham Harbor. - The Three Sisters of Nauset, est. 1839 on Nauset bluff. Only 'triplet' lights in U.S. history. Restored 1892 towers near Eastham. - Nauset Beach, est. 1839. First tower completed by US government. - Wood Island Light, built 1808 on E end of island, mouth of Saco River. - Portland (Bug Light) Breakwater, built 1905, south side of Portland Harbor. - Ram Island Ledge, built 1905, north side of Portland Harbor. - Goat Island Light, est. 1822, rebuilt in 1859 SW end of island. - Halfway Rock, built 1871, on rock ledge in Casco Bay ship lanes. - Cape Elizabeth ( Twin Lights ), both built 1874. W tower deactivated 1924, private. - Boon Island Light, this third tower built 1852. 133 ft. tallest in New England. - Spring Point Ledge, sparkplug light built 1897. BKW built 1951. - Isle of Shoals (White Island), est. 1821, current tower 1859. On NH Is. - Whaleback Ledge, built 1831, current 1872. - Portsmouth Harbor, (Fort Point/Newcastle) est. 1771, current 1877. At NH's Fort Constitution. - Cape Neddick (Nubble), built 1879 at N end of York Beach. Automated 1987.

Only 1st order Fresnel lens in Maine. - Burnt Island, est. 1821. W side enterance Boothbay Harbor. 1962 - last ME light to switch from kerosene to electricity. - Perkins Island, est. 1898. East side of the Kennebec River. - Kennebec River Range Lights, est. 1908 on Arrowsic Island. Guiding boats into Fiddler Reach. Only range lights currently in Maine. - Squirrel Point, est. 1898. SW point of Arrowsic Island on the Kennebec River. - Doubling Point, est. 1898 on Kennebec River near the shipbuilding town of Bath. - Pond Island, est. 1821, rebuilt 1855. The east side entrance to the Kennebec River. - Ram Island, est. 1883 on Ram Island off Ocean Point, on east side Boothbay Harbor. - The Cockholds, est. 1892 on small island off S tip of Southport Is. and the village of Newagen.

Moved inland 1996. - Annisquam Harbor, est. 1801, 1897 on Wigwam Point at Annisquam River. - Sankaty Head, est. 1850 N. of Siaconset on Nantucket Island. - Thacher Island (Cape Ann), Twin towers est.1771 and 1861, SE of Rockport. - Borden Flats, est. 1898, in the New Bedford Channel. - Boston Harbor, 1st lighthouse built in U.S. in 1716 on Little Brewster Island. Rebuilt 1783. Historic Nantucket

From left to right:

Nantucket Life Saving Station, this replica, built 1969, opened in 1972 as a museum. On site, the 1857 Fresnel lens from Great Point Lighthouse. - Great Point Light, stone tower built 1818. 1984 storm/erosion destroyed. Current replica built 1986, 300 yds W of first site. Part of the Coatue Wildlife Refuge. - Jethro Coffin House, built 1686. Only building left from islands’ original 17th century England settlement. Oldest home on island. - Sankaty Head Light, built 1849 on most SE headland in New England. Original Fresnel lens in the Whaling Museum. - Old Brant Point, built on Brant Pt. in 1856. Channel shifts made it obsolete in 1900. Now C.G. communications station. - Brant Point Light, first built on point 1746. Current (10th) built 1900. At 26 feet high, lowest light in New England. - The Old Mill, built 1746, oldest working smock mill in US. With stationary body, moving cap turns sails into wind. - Surfside Life Saving Station, built 1873, now Star of the Sea Youth Hostel. S tip of island, near the Surfside Beach.

S side Camden Harbor entrance Autom. 1972. - Owl's Head Light, est. 1825, automated 1989. S of Rockland Harbor. - Hernon Neck Light, built 1854 on S tip of Green Island marks east side Hurricane Sound. - Goose Rocks Light, sparkplug light built 1890. Between Vinalhaven and N Haven Is. - Fort Point Light, est. 1836, rebuilt 1857 in Fort Point State Park. - Matinicus Rock, 1827 twin towers built, rebuilt 1848, 1857. In 1927, N tower discontinued. - Browns Head, built 1832 and 1857 on Vinalhaven Is. - Two Bush Island, built 1897 at N end of Two Bush Channel. - Rockland Harbor, SW, private built 1981-1987. Marks the Seal Ledge.
